In 1964 a small group of local Mums set up the Brenchley and Matfield Nursery Group. At that time, there were just 22 preschool-age children and a handful of staff operating from the Brenchley Memorial Hall. Over the years the Nursery Group was renamed Brenchley Preschool and as time went on, the sessions and child numbers increased, so a second classroom was introduced for the two to three-year-olds in the Hall’s “Ladies Room”.
As numbers and financial responsibilities grew, the preschool was incorporated to become a Private Limited Company in January 2004. The preschool moved to its current site on the grounds of the Brenchley & Matfield Primary School in June 2012. Today we currently have over 90 children on our register with a team of twelve qualified staff members.
The preschool is run by a Committee that is made up of, and appointed by, parents who come together at least once a term voluntarily. The purpose of the committee is to provide governance and support for the running of the preschool, which includes fundraising, management oversight and ensuring financial stability.
We value very highly the contributions that you as parents can make and urge you, if you can, to get involved. In particular, we are always looking to recruit new committee members. The Committee heavily relies on the wider parent and relatives community to help out at, and support, our various fundraising events, maintaining the building/garden etc.
Please remember that all the money we generate goes straight back into the preschool so that we can continue to provide the same high-quality level of care and education for the children. For further information, please contact Victoria at 01892 724261 or brenchley.preschool@gmail.com
The key person approach is aimed at enabling close attachments between individual children and their families. A key person helps the child to feel familiar with the setting and to feel confident and safe within it. When children feel happy and secure, they are confident to explore and try out new things. Research has identified that close attachments allow this to happen. The key person approach ensures that parents have the opportunity to build a personal relationship, and it is a necessary process in young children’s development.
Complementing Home Life
The benefit to young children is that it can provide them with a deeply satisfying and enriching experience of preschool life that complements their home life, as a close emotional relationship with a key person in the setting does not undermine children’s ties with their parents.

Role of the Key Person
The key person is there to greet the child in the morning, to provide comfort to them if they are upset, to play and enjoy time with them and to be the one whenever possible to change them should they be wet. This staff member will also have other children for whom she is a key person and part of the job skill is being available for all children, although she cannot do everything for everybody all of the time. What is certain is that children who are enabled to feel safe and secure will be much more able to be themselves and try out new ideas and experiences in preschool.
Collaborative Planning
The key person plans with the family how they will work together to introduce the child and settle them in, how they will combine efforts to make sure that life at the nursery and life at home dovetails together.
